IO Interactive’s latest release, the James Bond game 007 First Light, has reached over 4 million sales just shy of three months after its launch, the developer announced on social media. This milestone reflects the game’s ongoing acclaim and fans’ enthusiasm.
The game previously hit a milestone of 2.7 million sales just over a week from its release, as revealed by IO Interactive’s CEO and game director, Hakan Abrak. Now, the impressive sales figures signal strong support for the title, particularly during challenging times for IO due to layoffs following the cancellation of their Microsoft Xbox publishing agreement for a different project, which was previously known as Project Fantasy.
Given the success of 007 First Light, the potential for a sequel seems promising. That said, any future instalment may see increased involvement from Amazon, the new proprietor of the James Bond franchise. It’s noteworthy that IO Interactive self-published this title.
007 First Light features a young James Bond who is part of the revitalised double-oh programme at MI6, offering players a new narrative experience. The game has been praised especially for its storyline and the deft way it captures the essence of the Bond character. Details from the development process revealed that the initial version of the game featured more ensemble aspects, while the character of John Greenway emerged as a highlight, celebrating British “restrained emotion”.
Looking ahead, a version of 007 First Light for the upcoming Switch 2 platform also appears to be in the works.
