Jonathan Blow discusses creating the biggest puzzle game

Renowned game developer Jonathan Blow is on the brink of releasing The Order of the Sinking Star, a massive puzzle game decade in the making. Set for launch on Thursday, this game boasts approximately 1,500 puzzles and is estimated to take around 500 hours to complete.

The Unconventional Approach

Blow, known for pioneering the indie game movement with titles like Braid, prefers allowing design to lead his projects rather than focusing on business practicality. He acknowledges that this might result in unconventional business decisions, but it guarantees uniqueness in his creations. This philosophy underpins The Order of the Sinking Star, a game that combines the mechanics of four existing free puzzle games, with permission from their original designers, to form new, intricate puzzles.

The game features mechanics, such as those from Mirror Isles by Alan Hazelden, where mirror reflections allow players to exchange positions across islands. These are then blended with mechanisms from another Hazelden creation, Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes, to create new puzzle dynamics.

Philosophy and Industry Views

Blow has often been vocal about his views on the gaming industry. He laments the loss of innovation-focused design in favour of more formulaic approaches. Blow’s outspoken stance extends to criticisms of popular games and social media trends. Despite controversies, like a public critique from Alan Hazelden regarding Blow’s political beliefs, Blow remains focused on game development, asserting that players ultimately desire quality games over political discourse among developers.

Blow is also critical of emerging technologies such as AI, noting its potential impacts on programming skills within the industry. He questions the productivity claims attributed to AI, cautioning against over-reliance on the technology, particularly for new developers.

Building from the Ground Up

In line with his non-compromising attitude, Blow developed The Order of the Sinking Star using a custom engine and programming language, Jai, which he created himself. Building from scratch was a challenging yet fulfilling endeavour aimed at ensuring the game met his exact specifications. This extensive effort contributed to the decade-long development period.

Looking ahead, Blow expresses a desire for his next project to be less arduous, as the current one proved to be highly challenging but ultimately rewarding. He reflects on the purpose of such endeavours, suggesting that they are central to his passion for the industry.
