Kohl’s offers deals for back-to-school season

Kohl’s has introduced a fresh batch of promotions tailored to back-to-school shoppers, with price reductions reaching as much as 50% on various school-related items, apparel, and beauty products. These discounts are part of an ongoing strategy to entice customers with value pricing, which has seen some success according to recent data.

The department store announced the new discounts on Tuesday, alongside an enticing offer for customers to earn $10 in Kohl’s cash for every $50 spent, to be used on future purchases. Additionally, a special weekend giveaway will allow shoppers to receive Kohl’s cash ranging from $5 to $100, subject to availability.

Shifts in Consumer Spending

Placer.ai’s research highlights Kohl’s ability to stabilise its customer visits, which fell just 1.4% in Q2 compared to the same period last year. This marks a less significant drop than the nearly 8% decline observed in Q1. The department store’s efforts come amidst a competitive retail landscape where rising gas and grocery costs impact consumer spending choices.

Despite these promotions, the upcoming back-to-school season may face challenges. A Circana report indicates that even with deals, consumers might still be cautious, weighing both cost and necessity before making purchases. This trend suggests the season could yield moderate results at best.

Market Forecasts and Analyst Perspectives

Analysts, including those from Morgan Stanley, have expressed a cautious outlook regarding the anticipated strength of the back-to-school sales. A recent research note led by Alex Straton highlighted a more conservative Q3 expectation, with the possibility of market forecasts being slightly optimistic if demand does not shift notably.

Contrasting with this caution, the National Retail Federation had projected a near 10% increase in back-to-school sales year-on-year, potentially reaching $43.3 billion. The unfolding situation will reveal whether Kohl’s strategic pricing can sway hesitant consumers in an economic environment where tariffs and inflationary pressures interact with retail dynamics.
