Kroger’s Precision Marketing division has achieved significant profit growth, with an impressive 24% increase in the second quarter, underscoring the growing importance of retail media to the grocery giant. This growth, as confirmed in their latest financial performance update, represents the highest since 2021, according to CEO Greg Foran, while addressing investors in a conference call last Friday. Over the past year, media monetization expanded by 88 basis points alongside a notable 20% boost in e-commerce sales, marking the second consecutive quarter of profitability in this area.
Retail Media Rises in Strategic Importance
Foran highlighted the significance of retail media and e-commerce at the beginning of the earnings call, before traditional merchandising was even mentioned. This prioritisation signals a strategic shift towards these areas within Kroger’s overall business strategy. According to a spokesperson from Kroger Precision Marketing, their growth can be attributed to increased on-site customer visits and novel ad opportunities, such as shopping assistant promotions and social media collaborations.
“Enhanced cooperation between our merchandising and media teams has extended ad inventory, while optimisation efforts have boosted visibility and conversion rates for our brand partners,” Foran noted.
Innovations in Advertising Through Technology
This summer, Kroger integrated advertising features into its AI assistant across its grocery websites and mobile apps, allowing users to plan meals, find recipes, and build shopping lists based on budgets or dietary preferences. Unlike some of its competitors like Walmart and OpenAI, which implemented advertising later, Kroger’s platform capitalised on this feature from the start.
Earlier this year, Kroger partnered with Google, providing advertisers the ability to leverage Kroger data in creating ad campaigns for YouTube and YouTube TV via Google’s Display & Video 360. Additionally, in June, Kroger joined TikTok to enable advertisers to reach customers using TikTok’s self-service ad platform.
Retail Media Ecosystem Expansion
Drew Cashmore, chief strategy officer at Vantage, praised Kroger’s approach by emphasising its ecosystem perspective, considering not just individual ads but how they interconnect through various media like TikTok, CTV, or Google Ads to enhance customer experience and purchase paths.
Sean Crawford from SMG highlighted Kroger’s strategy to expand its ad inventory as it competes with social media platforms for advertising investments. He noted the importance for retailers to transform their first-party data into valuable digital offerings, enabling advertisers to find unique and exclusive opportunities.
Future Growth Through Digital Networks
Kroger is looking to future growth through its digital screen networks, having launched video screens in nearly 600 stores’ wine-and-spirits departments and exploring expansions with Barrows Connected Store. Although specific numbers of screens or locations remain undisclosed, the initiative is seen as another step towards broadening Kroger’s advertising reach.
Foran, who had previously led Walmart U.S., brings his expertise from pioneering Walmart Connect, focusing on integrating merchandising, media, and marketing efforts, significantly informing Kroger’s current strategy towards retail media expansion.
