Macy’s launches AI tool for stock replenishment

Macy’s is expanding its artificial intelligence-driven inventory replenishment system to enhance its supply chain efficiency and maintain optimal stock levels. This strategic move, announced in a September earnings call, is part of the company’s initiative to ensure products are available in the right place at the right time, according to COO and CFO Tom Edwards.

Expansion of AI Technology

The advanced AI forecasting tool, which began as a pilot, is now being implemented more broadly. This rollout aims to improve in-stock consistency and streamline inventory processes, a key goal for Macy’s as it adjusts its operational strategy.

Strategic Transformation and Financial Goals

This development is integral to Macy’s “Bold New Chapter,” a transformative strategy launched in 2024 to enhance the retailer’s end-to-end operations. The plan focuses on achieving supply chain efficiency and is projected to save $235 million by 2026. Part of this strategy involves closing inefficient supply chain centers and opening a new automated distribution facility in North Carolina. Edwards anticipates realising these savings in the latter half of 2026, which should positively impact the gross margin. He expressed confidence in these measures driving revenue, enhancing the customer experience, and reducing costs.

Market Context and Industry Trends

Macy’s enters the autumn season with a solid inventory position, with a 2.5% inventory increase in the second quarter, aligning with sales growth. This trend of optimising inventory management is not unique to Macy’s. Competitors like Target are also leveraging AI and related technologies to make more informed inventory decisions. Target has utilised a digital twin for its middle-mile inventory system to bolster product availability and mitigate supply chain disruptions. Similarly, Lowe’s is adopting AI to analyse demand and enhance stock levels through its partnership with Relex Solutions. Kohl’s, meanwhile, has revised its inventory strategy, which has already resulted in improved spring product transitions.
