Metasearch platforms like Kayak and Skyscanner are undergoing significant transformation rather than being replaced. According to Kayak CEO Peer Bueller, the foundational distribution model for metasearch is facing disruption.
The Challenge of Evolving Metasearch
Bueller, who took the CEO position in February after serving as CFO for ten years, pointed out that developments such as Google’s Gemini interfaces and new carousels are altering search result visibility. Previously, results could appear organically, but now paid acquisition and a presence in large language models (LLMs) are needed.
He also highlighted the complexity involved in developing effective comparison tools. Successful data integration requires not just data scraping but robust systems involving direct database access, complex supplier integrations, and specific commercial agreements. This complexity is particularly challenging as airlines increasingly offer unbundled fares and differentiated attributes.
Adapting Metasearch Strategies
While metasearch isn’t being replaced entirely, platforms are broadening their approaches to include packages, multimodal travel solutions, and potentially integrating with travel agents. This evolution aims to enhance the travel search experience amidst technological advances and shifting user expectations.
