Middle East recovery stalls in Skift travel health index

The Middle East’s travel sector faces ongoing challenges as recent safety warnings and flight cancellations have hindered its recovery efforts. Despite a promising return to the benchmark level of 100 in June, the region experienced a decline to 94 in July, reflecting renewed traveler hesitancy. This was due to increasing security concerns and subsequent travel advisories that have disrupted the travel market already in a fragile state.

Impact on Middle East and Africa Travel Recovery

According to the Skift Travel Health Index, the overall state of travel in July dipped by 1% compared to the previous year, standing at 99. However, while global figures showed minor changes, the Middle East and Africa experienced a more significant downturn after a brief recovery. This has led to difficulties in actualising travel interest into real bookings.

Sector-Specific Performance

Among the various travel sectors in the region, vacation rentals emerged as a bright spot, showing a remarkable increase of 14% in comparison to the same period last year. This sector was the only one in the Middle East to exceed the benchmark during July.

The broader outlook for Gulf tourism appears challenging, as highlighted in recent reports about the potential for a lost year in the industry’s recovery. Accommodations must continue to navigate these uncertainties as they work to rebuild both demand and pricing strategies.
