Miyazaki on The Duskbloods’ protection for newcomers

FromSoftware is gearing up for the release of its much-anticipated multiplayer game, The Duskbloods, set for the Nintendo Switch 2. The game will feature skill-based matchmaking, a move intended to provide a balanced experience by aligning players of similar abilities and ensuring that beginners do not face overly skilled opponents.

Matchmaking and Game Design

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware and director of The Duskbloods, discussed the game’s matchmaking approach in an interview. The emphasis on skill-based matchmaking is aimed at minimising mismatches and accommodating players as they progress and develop their skills. By pairing experienced players with peers, and newcomers with other beginners, the game seeks to prevent overly lopsided matches.

The decision taps into a longstanding debate in the gaming community, where games like Call of Duty and Apex Legends have faced criticism for the way matchmaking impacts play dynamics. In The Duskbloods, players will also be able to unlock additional content, such as story elements and character customisation options, which can provide an enjoyable experience outside of competitive gameplay.

Building a Cohesive Community

Miyazaki highlighted the potential for future updates to further enrich the multiplayer experience. These could include features that promote interaction between veteran and novice players, such as event customisation and alliance systems. The intention is to create a supportive environment where experienced players can assist newcomers, enhancing the overall gaming community.

He cited the possibility of in-match events and alliances, suggesting these could become more rewarding when involving seasoned players. High-ranked players might even opt to help newcomers, akin to cooperative elements seen in other FromSoftware games.

Development and Future Plans

Despite the promising features, Miyazaki mentioned that not all elements will be available at launch. The development team continues to assess feedback from the ongoing Network Test, which runs from 21st to 24th August, to refine these systems. This test will provide insights into player reception of experimental mechanics like the Sigil and Virtue point systems.

The Duskbloods marks a significant shift for FromSoftware, known primarily for single-player titles. As a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, the game reaffirms the studio’s commitment to expanding its multiplayer capabilities, although Miyazaki has indicated a desire to eventually refocus on single-player projects after the releases of The Duskbloods and Elden Ring: Nightreign.
