Musical Spirograph creates browser-based doodle compositions

Musical Spirograph: A Blend of Art and Sound in Your Browser

Musical Spirograph is capturing users’ attention by merging visual art and music composition directly within their web browsers. The concept takes inspiration from the traditional Spirograph toy, utilising intricate geometric patterns, but adds a unique twist by incorporating generative music.

Create and Customise

This web-based tool allows users to create hypotrochoids and epitrochoids using mathematical equations, which are illustrated by points moving across the screen. As these points intersect with concentric rings, specific musical notes are triggered. For users who enjoy customisation, Musical Spirograph offers various options, including selecting from six virtual rotors, using up to three drawing arms concurrently, and adjusting numerous parameters to personalise the visual patterns. Musically, users can select from six different scales or customise the notes entirely, adjust the quantization and beats per minute (BPM), and extend the range of rings to cover two octaves. There are also six synth presets to choose from.

Limitations and Enjoyment

While the sound engine might not be flawless—it can occasionally result in clipping and audio artifacts—the interactive experience is undeniably engaging. Although a MIDI output feature to control other musical instruments would enhance functionality, Musical Spirograph remains a captivating way to explore creativity and pass the time through interactive audiovisual art.
