New baby bank welcomes everyone

A new baby bank has opened its doors in Newent, Gloucestershire, offering free children’s clothing and products to families in need. Located at The Ark Cafe, this hub of the Forest of Dean Baby Bank provides essentials like baby wipes, nappies, breast pumps, and swimwear. If required, larger items such as cots can be sourced from a warehouse in Cinderford.

Helen Carter, the lead volunteer, explained that the service is accessible to everyone without means testing. Parents are encouraged to pick up what they need and donate items their children have outgrown. Kylie, a local mother, remarked on the benefits of having such support close to home due to the high costs associated with baby products and everyday necessities.

Wide Range of Donations

The baby bank operates primarily through donations, and Carter expressed deep gratitude for the contributions. Currently, there is a high demand for autumn clothing bundles, and volunteers are also preparing a special Christmas box filled with festive clothing, blankets, and shoes.

Carter highlighted that many families, even those who think they are managing financially, appreciate the opportunity to save money which can then be spent on outings with their children.

Impact of Rising Costs

The financial strain on new parents is a growing concern. According to The National Childbirth Trust’s latest Parent Experience Report, nearly half of all new parents face increased financial struggles after childbirth. This figure rises to about 60% among those who are self-employed, unemployed, or working part-time.

During her first visit, Kylie emphasised the expense of children’s clothing and supplies, noting her good fortune in having hand-me-downs from an older child. She acknowledged the challenge for families without such resources.

Volunteering mom Isabel shared her motivation for supporting the centre. Having received help with food and clothing for her children in the past, she recognises the significant need for the baby bank’s services in the community and wishes more people were aware of it.

The Newent baby bank welcomes visitors every Tuesday morning from 09:30 to 11:30.
