New long-haul routes examine demand limits

As the year draws to a close, several airlines are introducing ambitious new long-haul routes, underscoring their commitment to tapping into niche markets with widebody aircraft. This strategy reveals where airlines anticipate a surge in travel demand.

Emerging Airline Ventures

In a bold move, Air Canada and United Airlines are launching nonstop flights to destinations in Northern Japan. Both airlines will operate three-times-weekly services to Sapporo, starting with United from San Francisco on 11 December, followed by Air Canada from Vancouver on 17 December. These routes are seasonal and aim to explore new travel demands in the region.

Expanding International Connections

Additionally, Delta Airlines is set to introduce the first U.S. nonstop flight to Saudi Arabia, reflecting a strategic foray into a market that previously saw its transatlantic partner withdraw. Furthermore, two European carriers are set to emulate Turkish Airlines’ approach with a one-stop service to Melbourne, highlighting increasing interest in connecting with Australian cities.

These newly announced routes are the product of extensive market research and financial investment. While the outcomes remain uncertain, they signify the airlines’ efforts to identify and capture emerging travel opportunities in the global aviation landscape.
