New walking trail highlights West Yorkshire’s beauty

The Bradford Pennine Gateway Trail is set to launch on 19 September, aiming to reshape how people view Bradford by showcasing the area’s stunning natural beauty. This newly created trail spans the recently designated Bradford Pennine Gateway national nature reserve and offers a fresh perspective on the sights and experiences of West Yorkshire.

Discovering the Trail

The 18-mile (28.9km) trail provides a connection between Ilkley, Saltaire, and Haworth, inviting walkers to explore beyond these tourist hubs. The journey across the stunning landscape of Rombalds Moor offers expansive views, including the radomes of RAF Menwith Hill and the Emley Moor transmitter. The mix of heather, bracken, and gritstone outcrops on these moors offers a habitat rich in biodiversity, essential for tackling climate issues.

Historical Landscapes and Scenic Views

A walk through the moors reveals historical imprints such as preindustrial era pits and second world war training sites, alongside more contemporary features like golf courses and forestry patches. The trek continues through culturally rich locations such as Shipley Glen, which carries a history of rallies and Victorian amusements, and the picturesque valley named for its Scottish connotation.

The trail, devised by Danny Jackson, former countryside and rights of way manager for Bradford council, aims to highlight the rural aspects of Bradford and its environmental benefits, emphasising its potential for improving air quality and reducing wildfires and floods.

Navigating Towards Haworth

Leaving Shipley Glen, the route passes through Trench Meadows, an SSSI recognized for its diverse flora. The trail then follows the historic paths near Bingley, presenting its Five and Three Rise Locks on the Leeds-Liverpool canal. This area inspired John Braine’s “Room at the Top” and offers rich natural and architectural beauty.

The walk takes in Harden Moor’s rare heathland and the vibrant invertebrate life it supports before descending into Haworth, where the trail concludes at Penistone Hill country park. Despite some drenching rain towards the end, the trail provides a deeply rewarding venture through striking landscapes.

The Bradford Pennine Gateway Trail is not just a path to admire nature but a journey through history and culture, providing a unique opportunity to appreciate the outstanding natural vistas and the evolving narrative of Bradford.
