Foot Locker and Nike are introducing a unique store format in Los Angeles’ Crenshaw area, blending retail with community engagement. Scheduled to open this coming Saturday, the store, “The Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker,” aims to foster local connections and cater to neighbourhood needs.
Innovative Community Space
The Crenshaw location is a fresh initiative targeting community-centric engagement, drawing inspiration from traditional recreation centres. Alongside being a retail destination, it will house various features such as a gym, an equipment room, creative workspaces, and a resource centre. These facilities are designed to offer local programming and serve as a hub for culture and sport. The store concept was developed in collaboration with Crenshaw High School, local businesses, Nipsey Hussle’s The Marathon Brand, and designer Gavin Mathieu.
Strategic Partnerships and Localisation
Both Foot Locker and Nike, currently undergoing brand turnarounds, consider this partnership pivotal to enhancing their local presence. Foot Locker’s Chief Marketing Officer Brett O’Brien emphasised the company’s dedication to investing in communities integral to their brand evolution and sneaker culture. This project continues Foot Locker’s strategy of rejuvenating select locations, an effort augmented under their new management by Dick’s Sporting Goods. Since May, Foot Locker had updated around 100 locations and aims for 250 by the back-to-school season. This revamp began with a successful 11-store pilot, focused on improving store layout, product selection, and overall customer experience.
Revival of a Tested Model
The concept echoes a previous Nike initiative, Nike Live, launched in 2018, which targeted neighbourhood-level customisation. Although the Nike Live store in Melrose has closed, the approach remains influential, particularly as Foot Locker prioritises dynamic vendor relationships to boost its market position. Notably, Foot Locker has launched a new branding platform to assert its role at the heart of the sneaker culture.
