Nuuly expands automation in fulfilment centres

Urban Outfitters Inc.’s rental subscription service, Nuuly, is significantly enhancing its fulfillment capabilities with a firm move towards automation. This strategic development, detailed by Nuuly President David Hayne during an earnings call on 26 August, includes the deployment of an automated order sortation system and other advanced picking solutions at its expansive Kansas City facility.

Expansion and Automation Plans

Nuuly, looking to manage escalating demand efficiently, has invested in expanding its Kansas City-area facility to a massive 1 million square feet, a size capable of servicing 600,000 subscribers. The goal is to automate much of the logistics process, which Hayne notes is crucial for keeping logistics costs low. This month, additional garment storage automation will become operational, while the order sortation system is expected by the fourth quarter, and a picking solution is targeted for launch next year.

Growing Demand and Future Facilities

The emphasis on automation comes in the wake of a 28.6% year-on-year increase in net sales for Urban Outfitters’ subscription sector, attributed to a 30.4% rise in active subscriber numbers as of 31 July. According to Hayne, maintaining efficiency in shipping and other operations for 500,000 subscribers necessitates substantial and ongoing infrastructural investment.

Beyond Kansas City, Nuuly plans to use these automated processes at a new site near Philadelphia, expected to open by late 2028. This will drastically increase the East Coast capacity from 300,000 to 1 million square feet and boost subscriber support from 200,000 to 600,000. The complete network is envisioned to facilitate approximately 1.2 million subscribers once all projects are operational, yielding a more efficient service model.

Financial Commitments to Expansion

Urban Outfitters is preparing to allocate around $475 million for capital expenditures in the fiscal year 2027, with logistics investments, now expected to take up 50% of that amount, playing an essential role in both retail and subscription service enhancements. This is a step up from earlier projections of a $385 million spend with 40% earmarked for logistics improvements, according to CFO Melanie Marein-Efron.

Improving Customer Experience

In addition to these operational enhancements, Nuuly is also refining its delivery service, introducing estimated delivery dates at checkout, with options for expedited shipping, and implementing seven-day carrier coverage to include weekend deliveries, as reported by Hayne.
