Quince, a digital-first lifestyle brand celebrated for its $50 cashmere sweaters, witnessed a remarkable turnout at its inaugural sample sale on 14th and 15th August in San Francisco. The brand, which launched in 2020 and has recently surpassed $2 billion in annual sales, sold out its inventory well ahead of schedule.
Unprecedented Shopper Engagement
The event saw enthusiastic customers queuing up four blocks long, with many arriving three hours before the opening. In total, 600 transactions were processed, with each buyer selecting an average of three items. The items for sale were distinctive, consisting of samples used in model fittings or photoshoots, making each piece unique.
Broadening Horizons with Physical Retail
Quince is known for its strategic forays into physical retail spaces, as evidenced by pop-up events held across New York City, Los Angeles, and Toronto earlier this year. The San Francisco sale provided Quince with a valuable opportunity to gauge customer interests and preferences live, giving them insights into expanding product categories.
Customer Insights and Brand Affinity
Dakota Kate Isaacs, Quince’s head of brand strategy and narrative, highlighted the significance of interacting with customers face-to-face. “We don’t usually get to see how Quince integrates into their lives,” Isaacs noted. The sample sale revealed a deep affinity customers have with the brand, as they shared stories and showcased Quince products in their homes.
Variety and New Discoveries
The vast array of Quince’s offerings enticed shoppers to explore beyond their initial intentions. Many who came for specific items, like cashmere sweaters, left with unexpected purchases such as linens and bath towels.
From Digital to Physical Presence
Known initially for women’s apparel, Quince has expanded its range to include products like fragrance, wellness items, men’s clothing, and furniture. These categories were well represented at the sale and were particularly popular among attendees.
Future Plans and Customer Demand
While Quince hasn’t scheduled another sample sale yet, the demand for them is palpable. Isaacs expressed hope that future events might take place. She underscored the customer desire to interact with the brand tangibly, whether through pop-ups, sample sales, or possibly more permanent retail spaces in the future.
Already a significant player in the retail space, Quince continues to innovate and adapt, driven by a deep understanding of consumer engagement and the evolving landscape of lifestyle brand retail. With a Series A funding of $50 million in 2021 and a $500 million raise in March 2023, Quince’s growth trajectory shows no signs of slowing down.
