Gardeners at London’s esteemed Royal Parks are set to strike after a significant majority backed industrial action over a pay disagreement. This decision, supported by 95% of voting members with a 75% turnout, stems from dissatisfaction with the proposed 70p an hour wage increase for skilled gardeners and team leaders, as disclosed by their union, GMB.
Pay Dispute with Contractor
The workers employed by subcontractor Idverde argue that the suggested pay rise is inadequate given their skill levels and responsibilities. The GMB union has described this offer as “an insult,” emphasising that the company fails to appreciate the skills and experience of these professionals. Anna Lee, the regional organiser for GMB, urged Idverde to return to negotiations and provide a fair pay deal, highlighting the essential role these gardeners play in maintaining the parks.
Current Wage Concerns
Currently, the pay for skilled gardeners and team leaders is only 55p per hour above the London Living Wage, which is £14.80. The union criticises Idverde for perceiving the London Living Wage as a ceiling rather than a baseline for wages.
Response and Involvement of The Royal Parks
The Royal Parks, which include renowned sites such as Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and Greenwich Park, have stated that the wage matter is the responsibility of Idverde. A spokesperson for The Royal Parks acknowledged the concerns of the involved parties and expressed a desire for a resolution. Idverde has yet to publicly respond to requests for comment on the matter.
