Target appoints Lowe’s exec as first chief AI officer

Target has announced the appointment of Chandhu Nair as its inaugural chief AI officer, bringing in an experienced executive with a background in product and technology roles from Lowe’s. Nair will take up the position on 24 August and be a pivotal player in enhancing the retailer’s technological strategy, especially by improving user experience through AI.

Leadership Changes to Boost Strategy

In addition to Nair’s appointment, Target has elevated Purvi Shah to senior vice president of user experience. The company emphasised the integral relationship between AI and user experience (UX) technologies, which it believes will allow for quicker decision-making while maintaining a human-centric approach. Both Nair and Shah will report to Chief Information and Product Officer Prat Vemana.

These strategic moves are part of CEO Michael Fiddelke’s broader plan to revitalise the company following diminishing sales figures, announced in March. The comprehensive strategy includes a projected $2 billion investment in operations and capital by 2026 to promote growth, modernise customer interactions, and strengthen brand identity.

AI Takes Centre Stage in Strategy

The inclusion of AI expertise at the executive level underscores its critical importance to Target’s overall operational objectives. The role assigned to Nair is expansive, with plans to unify AI initiatives across the organisation and specifically contribute to enhancing the user experience.

This innovative partnership between AI and UX flips traditional approaches, aiming less at direct efficiency gains and more at impactful outcomes. Nair stresses the need for what he describes as “radical collaboration,” integrating product, technology, data, and business teams with UX professionals in a cooperative process from inception.

As Target focuses on these technological enhancements, Martha Heller, CEO at executive search firm Heller, notes that integrating product and technology functions can create faster and more aligned responses to customer needs. This trend is mirrored across the corporate landscape, noted by Vemana’s elevation to a combined chief information and product officer role last year.

Strategic Timing and Future Outlook

Nair joins Target amid a pivotal transformation period that seems to show positive signs. During May’s Q1 earnings call, the company reported a 6.7% increase in net sales year over year, reaching $25.4 billion.

Reflecting on the potential of AI to reshape the retail landscape, Nair expressed that the technology’s true impact will be judged by the improvements in customer experience, employee empowerment, and the simplification of processes. “Ultimately, it’s about making the enterprise smarter while keeping people at the center,” he indicated in a LinkedIn post.
