Thai Airways’ recent struggle with operational disruptions due to severe weather in Bangkok has led to the dismissal of its CEO, Chai Eamsiri. The board of directors decided to remove him following significant flight delays and issues handling baggage at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Flood-Induced Chaos at Suvarnabhumi Airport
The catalyst for Chai’s removal was the extensive flooding in Bangkok, which caused a breakdown in staffing and operations, particularly affecting baggage handling. With thousands of passenger bags left stranded, the chaos at the airport was pervasive, disrupting flights and passenger services significantly.
Board’s Decision to Remove Chai
Chai Eamsiri announced to the press on Friday that he had been relieved of his duties as the CEO. He explained that the board had pushed for his departure to investigate why the flood crisis remained unresolved. Official communication from the company confirmed Chai’s suspension, as noted in a stock exchange filing.
Interim Leadership Assigned
In response to the crisis, the board appointed Samrit Samniang, who is a director at Thai Airways and has a background as an executive at PTT Exploration and Production, a Thai oil and gas company, to serve as the acting CEO. This move is part of Thai Airways’ swift action to stabilise operations and address the fallout from the weather-induced disruptions at their main international hub.
