The Witcher 3 remastered free for existing owners

The highly anticipated Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is set to be released on 29th September as a free upgrade for existing game owners. This comprehensive overhaul of the 2015 RPG classic brings not only visual and performance enhancements but also a revamp of the gameplay, including new combat finishing moves, updated animations, an adaptive camera, and a redesigned skill tree for increased flexibility. The remaster, developed in collaboration with Yigsoft, will also introduce features such as immersive meditation, a transmogrification system, an expanded photo mode, and cross-platform mod support. Notably, the remastered game will be available on Switch 2 and Battle.net for the first time.

Additionally, fans of the franchise will rejoice at the announcement of The Witcher 3 expansion, Songs of the Past, which will transport players to the new fantasy realm of Letten. Set twelve years after the original game’s debut, the expansion will have Geralt confronted by novel adversaries and equipped with a new weapon akin to Ciri’s chain from The Witcher 4 trailer. The narrative promises to delve into a tale filled with decisions and consequences, threatening not only Geralt’s life but also the fate of his homeland and his friendship with Dandelion. The newly unveiled region, Letten, is steeped in mystery and rural tradition and marks Dandelion’s homeland.

The upcoming Songs of the Past also marks the first detailed glimpse into content since its initial announcement in May. Co-developed with Fool’s Theory, the expansion is scheduled for release in 2027. It aims to offer content comparable in size to previous expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, both of which have been made free for all base game owners as of this evening.

This comprehensive update for The Witcher 3 comes amidst exciting times for CD Projekt Red, who shifted focus to the Cyberpunk 2077 project after the original Witcher 3 release. In addition to the remastered edition and expansion news, fans eagerly await The Witcher 4, slated for a 2028 release. Meanwhile, several of the original development team have moved on, including the game’s director, who has founded Rebel Wolves and is working on a new game titled The Blood of Dawnwalker.

More details about Songs of the Past will be unveiled at Gamescom this week, where attendees will have an opportunity to further explore the addition’s potential to recapture the magic of the beloved Witcher series.
