Ubisoft’s next foray into AI game development is Motherbrain

Ubisoft, well-known for its Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry series, is reportedly developing a new generative AI initiative named ‘Motherbrain’. This term, reminiscent of a character from the Metroid video game series, has surfaced through recent trademark filings uncovered by industry observers.

Trademarks Reveal AI Ambitions

Recent trademark applications from Ubisoft reveal plans for ‘Motherbrain’, including a “downloadable computer software using artificial intelligence (AI) for creating video games and interactive content”. Other applications suggest AI services for “analyzing data and interacting with humans” as well as involvement in the research and design of AI-based software.

Internal Use and Public Endorsement

‘Motherbrain’ has not been publicly acknowledged by Ubisoft, yet it indicates the company’s ongoing enthusiasm for AI technology in game development. Ubisoft has previously introduced ‘Ghostwriter’, a tool utilising AI to assist in crafting background dialogue for non-playable characters (NPCs). In a statement last year, CEO Yves Guillemot described generative AI as revolutionary, likening its impact to the transition from 2D to 3D gaming. More recently, Ubisoft announced it was increasing investment in ‘Teammates’, its premier generative AI experience within a shooter game.

Challenges Amidst Innovation

The push towards AI development comes amid significant organisational changes within Ubisoft. Earlier this year, the company shuttered two studios, cancelled six projects, and underwent job reductions as part of substantial restructuring. More recently, a further two studios were closed and another reorganised, resulting in about 380 job losses.
