The United States travel sector experienced a slump in international visitor numbers in August, as revealed by recent figures. The latest data from the National Travel and Tourism Office indicated that approximately 3.1 million tourists visited from abroad, marking an 11.8% decrease compared to the same period last year. This decline follows a 7% reduction in inbound travellers in July, compounding what was already a disappointing summer for the industry. Notably, visitor attendance during the World Cup also failed to meet expectations.
Substantial Decline Across Regions
The downturn in tourism was observed across all regions, with the most significant reductions seen in arrivals from Africa, which dropped by 25.5%. Other notable declines included Central America at 20.6% and Western Europe, which saw a decrease of 14.8%. These figures underscore the widespread nature of the issue affecting U.S. tourism this summer.
