Valve Corporation is set to launch its new standalone VR headset, the Steam Frame, priced at £889, marking the company’s first VR offering since the Index in 2019. This release comes after a 10-month wait following its official introduction. The Steam Frame features major enhancements including superior screens and an integrated movement and position tracking system, eliminating the need for external base stations.
Details and Package Inclusions
The Steam Frame’s price has been confirmed at £889 for a 256GB model, while a 1TB option is available for £1,089. For reference, this pricing is approximately £340 more than the 512GB version of the Meta Quest 3. Each purchase of Steam Frame comes with the headset, a rear-mounted battery, two controllers, a spacer, a charging cable, and a dongle that facilitates seamless game streaming from a PC.
Additional Accessories
Valve is offering an array of additional accessories for Steam Frame. A replacement power supply unit (PSU) is available for £29. The Ergonomic Accessories Kit, priced at £59, includes a headstrap, controller handstraps, and more. Additionally, a £49 Accessory Replacement Kit contains a face gasket, head cushion, and a light blocker. Although Valve hinted at an “enthusiast” accessory pack for the future, which includes a premium audio solution and a supplementary battery, this has not been officially confirmed by the company.
Third-Party Collaborations
Valve has teamed up with Zennioptical for snap-in prescription lenses, available for roughly $67.95. Moreover, Arcturus offers a full-colour camera upgrade for £129, catering to those who prefer something beyond the default monochrome passthrough camera.
Reservation and Shipping Plans
Customers eager to procure the Steam Frame can participate in a reservation process similar to the one used for Steam Machines. From today, 14th September, until 17th September at 6pm BST/10am PT, prospective buyers can choose their desired model. Post sign-up, Valve will conduct a “one-time randomisation” to allocate reservation and waitlist positions, with notifications being sent out on the 17th.
The exact shipping date remains uncertain. However, Valve anticipates sending out the first purchase emails by 18th September, as additional units become available for dispatch.
