Walmart is poised to enhance its Scintilla data platform for its merchants and suppliers with a series of updates set to roll out next year. These updates were announced during the Walmart Data Ventures’ Inspire conference, marking a significant step forward for Walmart’s first-party data platform.
New Features on the Horizon
The 2024 upgrades will introduce several advanced features, such as access to marketplace data, personalized dashboards, and custom alerts. This upgrade also includes an enriched version of the Marty AI agent and a tighter integration between the Scintilla platform and both the Scintilla In-Store supplier app and Walmart’s replenishment systems. Mark Hardy, head of Walmart Data Ventures, highlighted the importance of fostering a unified approach to collaboration with suppliers, aimed at enhancing customer experiences wherever they are.
Boosting Supplier and Marketplace Access
The forthcoming upgrades will grant first-party Walmart suppliers, who also sell on the marketplace, the ability to access their marketplace data through Scintilla. This feature will allow suppliers to gain comprehensive insight into their Walmart.com business operations. Amit Dodeja, CMO of Spreetail, praised this move, noting that increased access to proprietary marketplace data empowers brands to better evaluate and refine their advertising and pricing strategies.
AI-Driven Insights and Recommendations
The improved version of the Marty AI assistant will not only provide summaries and identify key metrics but will also offer actionable recommendations. These recommendations aim to address issues such as customer retention and supply chain efficiency. According to Hardy, the enhanced AI functionality will bring various data points together, aiding users in understanding their business performance and making informed decisions about future actions.
Expanding Scintilla’s Reach
While Scintilla remains unavailable to sellers exclusively on the marketplace, Walmart has been progressively widening its reach. The company recently announced plans to extend Scintilla to Sam’s Club suppliers in the U.S. next year. Furthermore, Scintilla In-Store, an iteration of the Volt platform acquired by Walmart in 2022, was launched earlier this year to provide supplier field representatives with access to store-level data.
Company Growth and Strategic Focus
Despite not disclosing revenue specifics from the Walmart Data Ventures division, CFO John David Rainey noted in a recent earnings call that this division continues to contribute significantly to the company’s growth. He emphasized the value users find in Scintilla’s enhanced decision-making capabilities, which help uncover shared growth opportunities within Walmart’s vast network.
