Waymo offers transit discounts with Visa

Waymo Teams Up with Visa for New Transit Discount Program

Waymo has introduced a new initiative in collaboration with Visa to offer discounted robotaxi rides that integrate with public transit. The program, available first in the San Francisco-Bay Area, gives a $2.85 credit to customers who use a Visa card to pay for a Waymo ride within two hours of a public transit trip.

This latest strategy aims to encourage the use of Waymo’s autonomous taxis in conjunction with public transit. It echoes previous trials Waymo conducted in San Francisco in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2025, though this is the first time Visa is involved, which assists in tracking combined transit and robotaxi use.

The initiative is aligned with the Bay Area’s public transit transfer discount system, specifically using SFMTA’s Clipper card technology. This model offers discounted rates for users who frequently change between buses, light rail, and subway services.

“Shared mobility is a team effort, and Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service can help people to more easily access public transit networks while enhancing transportation ecosystems,” stated Adam Lenz, the head of sustainability and environment at Waymo. Lenz highlighted the collaboration with local transit agencies as a step towards improving options for commuters and tourists alike.

Balancing Technology and Transportation

Despite the new initiative, some transportation analysts express concerns that autonomous vehicles could detract from public transit usage, potentially resulting in reduced services. They argue that rideshare passengers prefer direct journeys without needing to switch modes of transport. Furthermore, they point out that regular transit users, often on lower incomes, may not find rideshares affordable. Autonomous vehicles are also criticized for contributing to traffic congestion while claiming to improve it.

Waymo acknowledges these criticisms but cites user surveys showing over 50% of its clients also utilize public transit, suggesting that its services complement rather than compete with traditional transport systems.

Additionally, Waymo has initiated the introduction of designated robotaxi staging areas at Caltrain stations to help cut waiting times for those linking their train journeys with taxi rides. The company has plans to propagate both their discount scheme and staging area strategies to additional urban areas in the future.
