Sony Reintroduces a Classic with the WH-1000XM4C Headphones
In an unexpected move, Sony is relaunching its popular WH-1000XM4 headphones, which were discontinued in 2025, as the newly refreshed WH-1000XM4C model. Set to be available this fall, the headphones will retail at $300, offering a lower price point than the original model, which debuted at $350.
Design and Technology: A Familiar Aesthetic
The WH-1000XM4C closely resemble their predecessor with a compact design and a new lavender colour option. Despite the design similarities, some technological components remain unchanged, such as the QN1 processing chip and the use of four microphones for active noise cancellation (ANC). Compared to later models, the XM4C’s ANC technology is more simplified, especially considering the XM6’s advancements with 12 microphones and the updated QN3 chip.
Updated Features Bring Modern Enhancements
While the core design remains, Sony has updated the WH-1000XM4C’s sound capabilities to match more current standards, incorporating a 10-band equaliser within the Headphones app, replacing the previous 5-band setup. A new gaming preset and Bluetooth 6 support further enhance the modern experience, aligning with consumer expectations.
However, one area noting a slight regression is battery life; the XM4C is rated for up to 27 hours of ANC-enabled use, contrasted with the XM4’s previous 30-hour capacity. Despite this dip, the battery life is still sufficient for long journeys.
Alternative Options and New Releases
Sony has also unveiled updates to its midrange and entry-level headphones. The new WH-CH730N and WH-CH530 models incorporate the 10-band EQ and gaming presets available in the WH-1000XM4C. Additionally, these headphones showcase enhanced battery life, with the CH730N lasting up to 50 hours with ANC and the CH530 offering up to 55 hours without ANC. A new app feature, safe mode, allows volume output limits, catering to users who seek to protect hearing.
The WH-CH530, priced at $70, is available in a variety of colours including black, cobalt, mint green, white, pink, and coral. The WH-CN730N, available for $180, comes in black, blue, oat, white, or pink, with both models accessible now.
Sony Collaborates with Hello Kitty
Sony has announced a collaboration with Hello Kitty, offering exclusive bundles that come with headphones — either the WH-1000XM6, WH-CH730N, or WH-CH530 available in black or pink — along with a Hello Kitty-themed carrying pouch and branded bag. These limited-edition bundles are expected to be available on the Sony website later this year.
