Wolverine sells 1.9m on PS5, with many physical copies

The recent release of Marvel’s Wolverine by Insomniac Games is making waves in the gaming industry, having achieved nearly 2 million sales within the first three days. Despite mixed reviews and internet memes, the game has generated substantial revenue, contributing significantly to PlayStation’s earnings.

Strong Opening Sales for Marvel’s Wolverine

According to a report by Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott, Marvel’s Wolverine sold approximately 1.9 million copies shortly after its launch. This impressive figure includes a million units sold through pre-launch digital pre-orders, amassing more than $130 million in revenue so far. This demonstrates the game’s robust performance in its initial market appearance.

Physical vs. Digital Sales Dynamics

Physical sales constituted a notable portion of the game’s revenue, despite Sony’s plans to discontinue disc production for PlayStation games by 2028. Specifically, 22.9% of the game’s revenue came from physical editions. Compared to other PS5 titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which had 35% revenue from physical sales, and Astro Bot with 46%, Wolverine’s sales were more digitally skewed. Ghost of Tsushima also reported 37.6% from physical copies.

Market Performance and Player Overlap

Marvel’s Wolverine has outperformed other PlayStation Studios titles this year, surpassing Saros, Marathon, and Marvel Tokon in initial sales. Notably, a significant portion of players had previously engaged with other Insomniac superhero games, with 82% having played Marvel’s Spider-Man and 70% from Spider-Man 2. Additionally, 43% of its players have also tried Marvel Rivals, indicating an interesting cross-game interest within the Marvel gaming universe.

Future Prospects Amidst Mixed Reviews

Although the game has faced critique and parody online for elements like its game design and thematic details, these have not substantially impacted its sales performance. With the holiday season approaching, there is potential for the game to see shifts in sales dynamics and further growth. In contrast, Eurogamer has deemed the game simply as “just fine” in their review, highlighting the diverse critical reception.
