Waymo offers transit discounts with Visa

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has revealed a new collaboration with Visa to offer discounts on its robotaxi services for customers who combine them with public transit. This latest initiative seeks to encourage greater integration of Waymo rides with public transportation options by offering a $2.85 credit to users who pay with a Visa card for a robotaxi ride within two hours of taking public transport.

San Francisco-Bay Area: The Starting Point

The discount program is initially being launched in the San Francisco-Bay Area. To qualify, riders must use a Visa credit card to pay for both a Waymo robotaxi ride and public transit within a two-hour timeframe. The $2.85 credit awarded can be used towards future Waymo journeys.

Previous Programs and Visa’s Role

This initiative builds on similar test programs previously run by Waymo in San Francisco in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2025. The involvement of Visa is a new element that facilitates verification of payments for both robotaxi and transit travel, ensuring the proximity of the two services.

Integration with Local Transit Systems

The program is designed to resemble the public transit transfer discount offered in the region, which uses SFMTA’s tap-to-pay Clipper card system. This system already provides discounted travel for those using buses, light rail, and subway services.

Statements from Waymo

Speaking on the launch, Adam Lenz, head of sustainability and environment at Waymo, stated that “shared mobility is a team effort,” emphasising the role of Waymo’s service in making public transit more accessible and enhancing local transport ecosystems. He expressed excitement about partnering with transit agencies to bridge the gap for commuters and tourists alike through the new rewards program.

Addressing Concerns

While the move aims to boost public transit usage, some experts express concerns that autonomous vehicles could draw passengers away from buses and trains, potentially leading to reduced services. There is also apprehension that ridesharing users prefer direct trips and that low-income regular transit users may struggle with rideshare costs. Furthermore, autonomous vehicles are criticised for contributing to traffic congestion despite being promoted as solutions to it.

Waymo Expands Infrastructure

In response to criticism, Waymo highlights surveys indicating that over half of its customers in major cities also use transit. In support of this integration, Waymo announced plans to create numerous dedicated robotaxi staging areas at Caltrain stations, aiming to cut down on wait times for commuters using trains. The company intends to roll out both the discount and staging area programs across additional cities in future expansions.
