Waymo Partners with Visa to Offer Transit Discount
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Alphabet, is introducing a new discount initiative in collaboration with Visa. The programme presents a $2.85 credit to customers who use a Visa card to pay for a Waymo ride within two hours of taking public transport. This initiative is initially being launched in the San Francisco-Bay Area.
Program Details and Goals
This initiative mirrors previous efforts by Waymo to integrate its services with public transportation. Past trials have taken place in San Francisco in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2025. With the involvement of Visa, Waymo can now confirm when customers pay for both transit and robotaxi fares within a short time frame, thus ensuring the credit is applied accurately. The programme is inspired by the region’s transit discount system, which uses SFMTA’s tap-to-pay Clipper card for fare reductions on various public transportation options.
Enhancing Access to Public Transport
Adam Lenz, Waymo’s head of sustainability and environment, noted that the programme aims to facilitate better access to public transit systems and enhance the broader transportation network. The company stresses its commitment to collaboration with local transit agencies to minimise the transportation gap for commuters and travellers.
Addressing Criticism and Future Expansion
Though some experts fear that autonomous vehicles might detract from public transport use, potentially leading to reduced service levels, Waymo emphasises its supportive role in the transit ecosystem. According to company surveys, more than 50% of its users in major cities also utilise public transportation, reinforcing its position as a complementary service to existing transit methods.
Additionally, Waymo has inaugurated designated robotaxi pickup zones at Caltrain stations to decrease wait times for passengers traveling to and from these locations. The company plans to broaden both the discount programme and staging areas to additional cities over time, aiming to strengthen their integration with public transit nationwide.
