David’s Bridal CFO prioritises finance fundamentals

Kathy Cherian has taken on the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at David’s Bridal, a leading bridal retailer located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Her appointment was announced Tuesday and is effective immediately. Cherian, a former executive at Nike, emphasises the importance of integrating the finance department early in strategic decision-making to effectively support the company’s growth aspirations.

Building a Financial Foundation

Cherian, who began her career at KPMG, comes with extensive experience in finance and strategy, having held positions that bridge these functions throughout her career. Her tenure includes two years as CFO at Magnolia, and she spent over a decade at Nike in various senior roles. At Nike Canada, she managed financial operations during a phase of significant change, while at Magnolia, she took on the challenge of financial management in a private, founder-led setting.

“Finance is most effective when closely aligned with business operations,” Cherian stated, underscoring her belief that finance should guide informed decision-making around investments and strategic growth.

Adapting to the Digital Age

David’s Bridal is currently undergoing a digital transformation under CEO Kelly Cook’s leadership. The company is transitioning to an asset-light business model, focusing on digital expansion with the help of AI technology through what it terms the “Aisle to Algorithm” initiative. This includes tools like the “Pearl Planner,” a generative AI platform introduced in August 2023 to assist with wedding planning, which has since been expanded to include “Pearl Connect” for vendor communications.

The company is actively working to enhance its business-to-business services, reaching around 90% of U.S. brides during their wedding planning stages. Recent leadership announcements include a chief global transformation and operations officer, and a chief technology officer, made in March.

Aligning Finance and Growth

In her new role, Cherian aims to strengthen financial oversight and transparency in investment returns and performance metrics. Her goal is to support innovation while maintaining strong financial discipline.

“It’s crucial to balance new developments with the existing retail business,” Cherian remarked, highlighting the need for financial oversight to differentiate and support these diverse segments effectively.

Emphasising the need to use finance as a tool for innovation, Cherian concluded, “Proper financial management is vital for fostering innovation, not hindering it.”
