Nielsen uses wearables to track viewing habits

Nielsen Enhances Audience Measurement with Wearable Technology

In response to the complexities introduced by the streaming era, Nielsen has announced a strategy to enhance its viewership measurement by utilizing data from wearable devices. On August 31st, the company revealed its plan to integrate co-viewing data obtained from smartwatch-like gadgets into its analytics. These devices, part of the Portable People Meter (PPM) Wearables program initiated nationwide in 2016, are designed to track audio from television broadcasts directly from a viewer’s wrist without requiring users to log in.

Data Integration and Methodological Updates

Nielsen’s strategic move comes on the heels of its earlier adoption of the Advertising Research Foundation’s Device and Account Sharing (DASH) survey data, aimed at refining audience demographics. The company plans to incorporate DASH estimates derived from up-to-date surveys, alongside data from two specific surveys that enhance the representation of Spanish-speaking households within its panel. Moreover, adjustments to its machine learning framework will allow for a more accurate demographic analysis of individual households, ensuring the data reflects broader population characteristics rather than skewing towards older viewers.

Maintaining Industry Standard amidst Viewing Habit Changes

As viewing patterns become increasingly fragmented, Nielsen is actively positioning itself to remain the benchmark for television audience ratings. By advocating for panelists to use wearable technology, Nielsen addresses the substantial challenge posed by streaming services, which complicate precise viewership statistics. Despite potential concerns over privacy with this technology, Nielsen believes these advancements will yield more dependable data, setting a precedent in capturing viewership metrics that could inspire similar approaches across the industry.
