Kumi Tanioka, known for composing music for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, has disassociated herself from an album attributed to her on Spotify, describing the EP, titled “A Village Built on Wind,” as something she did not create.
Tanioka took to social media platform X to voice her concerns, speculating whether the album was crafted by another individual with her name or generated through AI technology. “This album is definitely not something I made,” she emphasized in her post.
Spotify Verification and Attribution Issues
Despite being a verified artist on Spotify, which confirms her status as a genuine creator, Tanioka was mistakenly linked to the EP. This mix-up occurred despite her having no known involvement in submitting this album to the streaming service.
The situation was also addressed by Digital Sonic Design, which publishes some of Tanioka’s works. They clarified that while this incorrect attribution does not breach Tanioka’s copyright, the association can mislead listeners. The company further noted that on YouTube Music, the tracks are identified as AI-produced.
Response to Systemic Loopholes
Digital Sonic Design highlighted that such incidents exploit vulnerabilities within streaming platforms. They recalled past occurrences where unreleased tracks were distributed after being recreated by ear. This pattern has prompted them to contemplate a suitable reaction to prevent future instances of false attributions.
