Microsoft Confirms Next Xbox as a “Family of Devices”
Project Helix, the long-awaited next-generation console from Microsoft, is set to be more than just a single piece of hardware. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently revealed that the upcoming console will be part of a “family” of devices, rather than a standalone unit, during an interview with BBC News. Though she was queried about the possibility of a discless console, Sharma opted not to provide a direct answer, instead hinting at a broader range of hardware offerings from Microsoft.
This announcement ties into a previous declaration by Microsoft and AMD in 2025, outlining a strategic partnership to develop a portfolio of devices, including the next-generation console. It is presumed that this collaboration could extend to the Helix family of devices. Speculation has also arisen concerning the potential for third-party manufacturers to produce their own versions of the Project Helix devices. Xbox’s Vice President of Next-Gen, Jason Ronald, has not dismissed this possibility, merely confirming that Project Helix will definitely be available as a first-party Xbox console.
While there remains uncertainty about the exact launch date for Project Helix, Sharma’s unexpected leadership announcement in February set the stage for AMD to suggest readiness for a 2027 release. Further confirmation came in March during a conference, where Ronald stated that an alpha version would not be expected until 2027. Intriguingly, this next-gen Xbox will have the capability to play PC games, adding a new dimension for gamers eagerly awaiting its release.
