Check your potential annual pension income of £13,000

The annual state pension in the UK is poised to exceed £13,000 in the near future. However, a recent survey by the UK tax authority reveals that one in eight individuals have yet to check their expected pension benefits. This oversight could lead to missed opportunities for boosting future retirement income.

Current State Pension Rates

The state pension is funded through contributions made during an individual’s working life and is available when one reaches their late 60s. Presently, those who have reached pension age post-April 2016 are eligible for a flat-rate state pension amounting to £241.30 weekly, which aggregates to £12,547.60 annually. In contrast, beneficiaries who claimed pension before April 2016 receive an old basic state pension of £184.90 weekly, totalling £9,614.80 annually, often supplemented by an additional state pension.

Typically, pension incomes are supplemented by personal savings accumulated over the course of a person’s career. Given the UK’s pension system’s triple lock guarantee, the state pension rises annually aligned with the highest of inflation, average wage increases, or a 2.5% floor. With this in mind, the flat-rate pension is anticipated to exceed the £13,000 benchmark by next April.

Eligibility Criteria

State pension eligibility in the UK is largely contingent on National Insurance (NI) contributions. To qualify for a full state pension, an individual usually needs 35 years of qualifying NI contributions. Interruptions in one’s contribution record may occur due to living abroad or taking breaks for familial responsibilities, such as childcare or eldercare, although credits can be claimed through child benefit or carer’s allowance. Voluntary contributions are an option for filling contribution gaps, but these are restricted to a six-year lookback period from April 2025 onwards. Therefore, checking your pension forecast well ahead of retirement is prudent.

Checking Your Pension Forecast

To verify future pension entitlements, individuals can access their forecast either through the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) app or via the official online state pension forecast service. Identity verification with official photo ID is a crucial step in accessing these services. Users should beware of phishing scams masquerading as official communication, advising against clicking on links from unsolicited emails or text messages.

For broader pension-related guidance, HMRC’s Tax Confident platform and the independent Money Helper website offer free tools and resources.

Reasons for Not Checking

The main reason cited by individuals who have not checked their pension forecast is that they perceive retirement as a distant future, according to a survey of 5,000 participants by the HMRC. Other common reasons include losing track of pension plans from previous employment and uncertainty about the impact of career gaps on pension eligibility. The survey highlighted that those aged 45-54 were most likely to be in the dark about their pension forecasts.

Myrtle Lloyd, the chief customer officer at HMRC, advises individuals to proactively review their pension forecasts, whether they are close to or far from retirement, to identify potential actions for enhancing their future entitlements.
