Pinterest introduces visual search ads in new ad tools suite

In a strategic move to enhance its advertising capabilities, Pinterest is unveiling an array of new tools and experiences aimed at leveraging the power of artificial intelligence. Announced during the “Pinterest Presents” event on Tuesday, these features will start to be available in the coming weeks.

Advancements in Advertising

A highlight of the new features is the introduction of Visual Search Ads. This innovation allows companies to promote products within search results and on detailed pin views that users click on. Additionally, the Pinterest Performance+ suite, the platform’s tool for automated advertising, is gaining more functionalities, including manual A/B testing. Advertisers will have control over which products to prioritise during critical times, such as seasonal launches.

Bill Ready, Pinterest’s CEO, emphasised that these updates mark Pinterest’s transformation into a comprehensive marketing solution. He explained that Pinterest is now a potent platform for both increasing brand awareness and achieving tangible marketing results, all powered by AI. Ready described the platform as a “magic moment for marketers” when users visit Pinterest with the intent to discover what to purchase next.

User Demographics and Search Trends

Pinterest’s young and growing user demographic presents a substantial opportunity for advertisers. Over half of its 640 million monthly users are from Generation Z. Users engage in over 80 billion searches each month, with most related to shopping or finding specific products. Notably, 96% of these searches are unbranded, allowing advertisers significant room to manoeuvre.

Expanding Measures and Market Insights

Pinterest has been enhancing its ad offerings to boost engagement and revenue over the past years. Jack Johnston from Tinuiti noted a 45% increase in Pinterest investments in early 2024, reflecting a positive reception. As a result, advertisers who had paused activity on Pinterest are reincluding it in their marketing plans. According to Pinterest’s Chief Business Officer, Lee Brown, paid advertiser clicks have increased fivefold over the past three years. Brown highlighted the platform’s unique appeal—users are receptive to ads because they seek inspiration for purchases.

Interactive User Experience Features

Pinterest continues to enrich user interaction with features like Restyle, a camera function that lets users envision different home décor styles by capturing their space and applying aesthetic changes digitally. This offering will soon be available in beta in the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, Pinterest is encouraging brands to collaborate with creators, enhancing returns on ad spends and brand recognition.

Innovative Media Ventures

After acquiring the CTV ad platform tvScientific in February, Pinterest now accommodates standalone connected TV advertising. Their Roku series “Bring My Pinterest to Life,” which links users to shoppable boards, has begun filming its second season, set to release in 2027.

Addressing AI Concerns

Pinterest executives distanced themselves from excessive AI-generated content complaints by assuring safe AI practices. Modifications, such as reducing AI content visibility in specific categories, have been made. Furthermore, Pinterest has limited generative AI training data sharing for users under 18.

Earlier, Pinterest posted an 18% rise in second-quarter sales from the previous year, reaching $998.2 million, with active user growth and a higher-than-expected average revenue per user. The company forecasts revenue between $1.19 billion and $1.21 billion for the upcoming quarter.
