Discord has relaunched its age verification system, aiming to address privacy concerns by offering less invasive options. The updated system, introduced after initial plans faced significant backlash in February, allows users to verify their age in ways that do not necessarily involve sharing sensitive biometric data. This comes as Discord adapts to expanding age assurance laws in various regions such as Brazil and Texas.
New Verification Options
The original proposal involved users verifying their age through government ID or facial recognition, leading to widespread privacy concerns. Under the new system, users can have their age estimated by the duration of their account activity and the nature of their server interactions. Importantly, Discord’s Chief Technology Officer, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, confirmed that private communications are not monitored in this process.
Age Group Classifications
The system categorises users into age groups: if classified as adults (18+), their experience remains unchanged. However, those in the 13-17 age group will encounter safeguards blocking access to age-restricted content. Adults misclassified can verify their age using alternative non-biometric methods.
Privacy-First Approach
Vishnevskiy highlighted that users have multiple options to confirm their age, such as providing credit card details or using age information from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Data collected is strictly for age verification purposes. Discord’s decision to implement these protections globally reflects a proactive stance on future regulations concerning teen safety and privacy.
Despite the complexities and potential controversies surrounding age assurance techniques, Vishnevskiy emphasised Discord’s commitment to a privacy-preserving method. He encouraged stakeholders and the public to engage with policymakers, influencing the direction of internet regulations that impact both user safety and privacy rights.
