Dollar General uses AI in distribution centres and stores

Dollar General is integrating artificial intelligence across its North American operations to streamline its supply chain and enhance efficiency. The retailer has partnered with Relex Solutions to deploy this technology in its 21,000 stores and 34 distribution centres. The collaboration was announced in an August 27 press release by Relex Solutions.

AI in Supply Chain Management

The adoption of Relex’s AI platform will enable Dollar General to manage several key aspects of its supply chain more effectively, including store replenishment, ordering schedules, lead times, supplier coordination, and fulfilment methods. This unified platform aims to provide comprehensive forecasting, replenishment, and allocation planning within a single environment. By doing so, it ensures that distribution centres and stores have access to the same demand-driven data, as noted by Jeff Vaughan, Dollar General’s senior VP of global inventory management.

A Broader Trend Among Retailers

Other corporations have also turned to Relex’s AI technology to boost supply chain operations. Lowe’s announced earlier this year that it plans to extend its partnership with Relex to enhance its inventory management and targets a full rollout by early 2027. Similarly, Guitar Center utilised Relex’s solutions last year to bolster its inventory planning and increase visibility across its supply chain, aiming to minimise both stockouts and excess inventory.

Strategic Vision and Future Plans

The move towards AI integration is part of Dollar General’s larger strategy to drive operational efficiencies and mitigate cost pressures. CEO Todd Vasos highlighted during an earnings call on August 27 that the retailer is in the early phases of developing agentic operating systems designed to refine and optimise organisational workflows, ultimately boosting productivity enterprise-wide.
