Fragrance boosts beauty sales with emotional and functional value

In the first half of 2026, both prestige and mass beauty retail sales in the United States witnessed consistent growth, indicating the sector’s robustness amid cautious spending by consumers, as revealed by Circana’s report.

Beauty Sales Surge in 2026

The period saw a significant boost from fragrance, skin care, and self-care products. Prestige beauty retail sales increased by 7% compared to the previous year, amounting to $17.1 billion. Mass beauty retail sales also rose by 7%, reaching $39.2 billion. These figures highlight the resilience of beauty spending even as consumers exercise caution in their purchasing choices.

Consumer Preferences and Spending Patterns

Consumers’ focus on value for money remained evident, as they selectively invested in products offering both emotional and functional benefits, noted Larissa Jensen, Circana’s global beauty industry adviser. This behaviour underscored the beauty sector’s ability to tap into consumer willingness to explore various price points.

Fragrance and Skin Care Lead Growth

Fragrance emerged as a top-performing category in the first half of 2026. Although prestige fragrance unit sales were stable, revenue increased by 6% alongside a 5% rise in average prices. This growth was driven by a shift towards higher-concentration formulas such as eau de parfum and perfume, with significant contributions from women’s fragrances in the luxury domain. In the mass market, fragrances experienced the fastest growth, with sales up 15% and units rising by 7% owing to heightened demand and increased prices.

Skin care led the prestige segment with a 9% increase in sales and double-digit unit gains. The body care segment saw a 16% rise, fuelled by demand for products like cleansers, lotions, and deodorants, while sun care jumped by 19%. Prestige hair care recorded an 11% sales increase, with hair serums boosting unit sales by 8%.

Market Shifts and Strategic Changes

In the mass market, skin care outperformed other categories, showing universal growth in both dollar and unit terms. However, there were mixed results in mass retail hair care, with a 7% sales increase but a drop in unit sales. Makeup also registered modest growth, with prestige sales increasing by 3%, but unit sales declined. At the mass level, makeup sales grew by 5%, although unit sales decreased.

Looking forward, Jensen commented that ongoing consumer engagement in critical segments and technological advances in shopping will shape beauty industry growth. She highlighted the importance of seamless transitions from consumer inspiration to the point of transaction for future success of brands.

Retailers are adapting to these spending patterns. Mass retailer Target recently concluded its shop-in-shop partnership with Ulta Beauty but is still engaging beauty customers with its Beauty Studio concept. Meanwhile, Ulta captured increased prestige market share in early 2026 and is slated to open a new experiential store in New York City’s Times Square by late 2027.
