Kingdom Come 2 director supports GTA 6 influencing prices

Martin Klima, co-founder of Warhorse Studios and known for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, believes that the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) could set a new standard for video game pricing. In a recent discussion, he highlighted the challenges facing the game industry, particularly noting the rising costs of development and a plateauing audience for new game purchases.

Industry Struggles

According to Klima, one significant issue is the transition to digital sales, which has eliminated the retail element and its associated revenue: “We destroyed retail, and we took all their money.” This, coupled with increased development costs and stagnant audiences, poses a financial challenge for game studios.

The Case for Higher Prices

Klima proposes that raising the price of games could be a solution to these financial pressures. “The last thing you can do is to increase the unit price,” he explained, “but everybody’s scared to death about it.” He hopes Rockstar Games’ upcoming release, GTA 6, could lead the way in justifying higher prices in the industry.

Currently, GTA 6 is priced at £69.99 for the Standard Edition in the UK, while in the US, it sells for $79.99, which is pricier than most other high-profile releases. The Ultimate Edition is expected to reach up to $99.99. Klima believes Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, are possibly the only ones capable of daring such a price increase, which he deems necessary for the industry’s longevity.

Enthusiasm for Technological Advances

Despite Klima’s hopes for GTA 6’s success, he admits he is not personally excited about playing the game. “I am not going to be playing GTA 6 unless I’m somehow forced to,” he noted, expressing his bafflement over its widespread popularity. Nonetheless, he appreciates the technological innovations involved in such ambitious projects, expressing, “somebody is making these games that are really technologically marvels.”

Anticipated Launch Amid Controversy

GTA 6 is set to launch on 19 November for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with speculation swirling about potential new content such as full-on sex scenes. Meanwhile, Rockstar is navigating a union dispute in Scotland, accused by former employees of unfair labour practices.
