Prada highlights skirts over trousers at Milan show

Milan Fashion Week’s Opening with Prada’s All-Skirt Lineup

In a bold move, Prada opted to present an entire collection centred around skirts at the initiation of Milan Fashion Week. The collection notably omitted dresses and trousers, showcasing a unique dedication to this garment. Over 63 looks were highlighted by skirts, solidifying the brand’s trendsetting direction.

An Exceptional Design Partnership

For six years, Miuccia Prada has co-created with Raf Simons, a Belgian designer two decades her junior. Their collaboration has consistently produced unique fashion narratives, capitalising on Prada’s penchant for avant-garde creativity. Simons disclosed, “She had the idea to focus on skirts this time… why not make it an all-skirt show?”

Miuccia Prada revealed her preference for skirts over dresses due to the versatility and contrasts they offer. “The way I think and feel is complicated, contradictory. If I wear something feminine, I want to wear something masculine too,” she commented. Prada’s collection featured A-line skirts with intricate designs, such as a grey skirt with a polka-dot slip and a lemon skirt adorned with embroidered black tulle.

Rethinking Fashion Norms

This season, the skirts were showcased with a variety of accompaniments, from lace bras to sweaters and shirts. Simons remarked on their adaptability: “Whether you want to go to work, or be sexy, or be relaxed with your kids, you can wear the skirt with whatever you choose.”

The collection represents a shift in traditional fashion focus, where the garment below the waist becomes a canvas for expression, as Mrs Prada articulated: “I like my clothes to have ideas… I think of a skirt the way some people think of a T-shirt – a place to express what I think.”

Industry Shifts in Milan

As Prada continues to innovate, the broader Milan fashion landscape is experiencing a state of transition. The Prada brand has extended its influence with its acquisition of Versace. Donatella Versace, following her departure from the family brand, is venturing into a new partnership to launch a beauty brand, and eventually, a fashion line.

The fashion arena in Milan, traditionally stable, is evolving as several high-profile houses undergo leadership changes. Maria Grazia Chiuri has taken charge at Fendi, and new designers are stepping into pivotal roles, embodying an ongoing shift in power dynamics within the Italian fashion industry.
