Simpsons creator hints at return of Hit & Run game

The speculation around a potential return of the popular video game The Simpsons: Hit & Run was revived over the weekend when Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, hinted at its comeback during a panel at Disney’s D23 event. Groening’s comments sparked intrigue when he mentioned that the classic 2003 game might be “coming back in some form.” This remark was quickly followed by current showrunner Matt Selman attempting to downplay the suggestion with a tongue-in-cheek addition of “…or not.”

Hints of a Revival

Although there has been no official announcement, Groening’s comment marks one of the most hopeful signs for fans eager for a re-release. Interest in the game remains high, particularly following the rebranding of Radical Entertainment, the original developers, into New Radical Games. This studio now focuses on remastering classic games, with Hit & Run featured prominently on their site.

Background of Unreleased Sequels

Interest in a sequel is not new. Producer John Melchior revealed earlier this year that Radical Entertainment had previously begun working on Hit & Run 2, along with a separate medieval-themed Simpsons game proposed by Groening. However, both projects were shelved after original publisher Vivendi declined to pursue additional Simpsons titles, a decision for which Melchior was never given an explanation.

Fan Engagement and Showrunner Comments

Showrunner Matt Selman, who also contributed to the original Hit & Run’s writing, has maintained a sense of possibility regarding its revival. Just this year, he advised fans to “never say never” in terms of seeing a remake or revival of the game. During celebrations for the 800th episode of The Simpsons, Selman acknowledged the enduring love for Hit & Run, indicating that while nothing is certain, the desire from fans is recognized.

Selman’s nostalgic reflection on his involvement with the game’s development adds to the anticipation, noting that despite the multitude of Simpsons games released, Hit & Run remains a standout beloved by fans.
