Sony to revive classic PlayStation games with Ape Escape

Sony is reportedly in discussions to resurrect several of its classic PlayStation franchises with a fresh approach, tapping small external developers to lead the charge. One of the first projects under this initiative is believed to be a new instalment of the Ape Escape series.

The information surfaced during The Jeff Gerstmann podcast, where Gerstmann revealed that Evening Star, the indie studio known for crafting Sonic Mania and its subsequent release Penny’s Big Breakaway, is purportedly developing the new Ape Escape title. VGC has also confirmed these details through its own sources.

Gerstmann indicated that the new game isn’t close to release but acknowledged ongoing discussions about Ape Escape dating back nearly a year. He clarified that while some speculated Team Asobi (known for Astro Bot) might be involved, it is indeed an external studio taking the helm—specifically, Evening Star.

Beyond Ape Escape, Sony is apparently looking to involve other independent developers in rejuvenating some of its nostalgic IPs. A precedent was set with the 2025 release of Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots, which Bandai Namco developed.

The Ape Escape series, cherished for its engaging 3D platform gameplay on the PS1 and PS2, involved capturing mischievous apes using a variety of intriguing gadgets. The franchise’s main storyline last continued in 2005 with Ape Escape 3, though it made a cameo in Astro Bot as a tribute to past PlayStation hits.

Astro Bot highlighted the wealth of classic titles in PlayStation’s portfolio, sparking hope among fans for more revivals. There are whispers about a new Killzone game in the works by People Can Fly, known for their work on Outriders and Gears of War: Judgement. A resurgence of beloved series like Sly Cooper remains on the wish list for many.
