Teenage Engineering CEO announces end of synth production

Teenage Engineering Considers Ceasing Synthesizer Production

Teenage Engineering, the design firm known for its innovative music devices, is contemplating ending its production of synthesizers, including the renowned OP-1. The company’s founder and CEO, Jesper Kouthoofd, revealed this potential shift in strategy during an interview with Highsnobiety.

Shift Away from Synths

In a discussion with Highsnobiety, Kouthoofd explained the decision emerged from an organisational overhaul last fall. He announced to his team the intention to halt the production of synthesizers, stating that “the products aren’t the business,” and suggesting that the company could diversify beyond its current offerings.

The OP-1 synthesizer, released in 2011, has been instrumental in establishing Teenage Engineering’s standing in the market. The decision to potentially part ways with such an integral product has raised eyebrows, considering the firm’s deep-rooted association with music technology.

Broader Horizons

Teenage Engineering has established itself not only in music but also as a sought-after design partner. The company has collaborated with notable names such as Ikea, Nothing, and Playdate, showcasing its capacity for projects that extend beyond audio equipment.

As of now, Teenage Engineering has not provided any further comments on this strategic redirection.
