Untranslatable book inspiring clair obscur now translated

A celebrated French novel, La Horde du Contrevent by Alain Damasio, is set to reach English-speaking readers for the first time with its upcoming translation release. The English version, titled Horde of the Counterwind, will be available in the United States from Abrams Books on 13th October 2026, while the UK release is expected on 12th November, pending confirmation.

The Journey and Legacy of the Horde

This renowned novel follows a group of intrepid adventurers battling ceaseless winds in an attempt to discover their origin, a quest that has already seen 33 hordes fail over 800 years. The story delves deeply into themes of endurance, loss, and resilience. Originally published in 2004, it won the prestigious Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire in 2006 and remains a cornerstone of modern French sci-fi literature.

Untranslatable No More

The translation of Damasio’s intricate prose has been considered an immense challenge, but Alexander Dickow, a translator with a solid repertoire, has taken it on. Dickow’s previous translations include works by Max Jacob and Sylvie Kandé, showcasing his skill and experience in handling complex texts.

Inspiration for a New Generation

La Horde du Contrevent has also inspired modern creative works. Before the release of the video game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in 2025, Tom Guillermin of Sandfall Interactive highlighted its influence on the game’s narrative, which revolves around explorers on a perilous journey. The game further draws from various sources like European history, distinct paintings, and influential video games such as Persona and Final Fantasy.

A Wait Soon Over

Fans of science fiction and cult novels have eagerly awaited this translation. Those interested can prepare to delve into Damasio’s world, reliving the adventure in the English language for the first time later this year.
