In an unprecedented surge, back-to-college expenditures this year are predicted to exceed $100 billion for the first time ever, as reported by the National Retail Federation. A significant portion, amounting to approximately $14 billion or $194 per shopper, is allocated for dormitory and apartment furnishings. This sector stands second only to electronics, showing notable growth. According to research by CTV ad platform MNTN, advertisers in categories linked to dorm essentials experienced an impressive 73.65% increase in revenue during July’s peak buying season last year.
Urban Outfitters is at the forefront of this trend, actively expanding its furnishings division in recent years. The company’s non-apparel merchandising leader, Karen Booker, discussed these developments with special projects editor Melissa Daniels during a recent episode of the Modern Retail Podcast.
Elevating Bedding to a Core Focus
This year, Urban Outfitters has honed in on bedding as a prime focus area. Booker describes bedding as a “hero category,” essential in the limited space of a dorm room. Reflecting customer feedback from last year, the company introduced softer materials and updated prints and patterns to enhance comfort and versatility.
“It’s the hero of their personal space, particularly in these new dorm areas, which are pretty small,” Booker explained, emphasising the need for bedding to be functional and personally expressive, evoking a sense of home.
Striking the Perfect Balance
In putting together this year’s dorm collection, balancing affordability with style was a key priority for Urban Outfitters. Booker highlighted how leaning into floral and nostalgic designs helped maintain this equilibrium. The rising trend of using photography equipment and frames is also providing a pathway for affordable self-expression. Additionally, they have introduced functional items like jewellery and beauty storage that are aesthetically appealing.
“The Gen Z consumer is really smart and very stylish and very creative,” said Booker. Designing products that meet these high standards while being cost-effective remains both a challenge and a source of gratification for the company.
Trendspotting Expertise
Staying at the forefront of trends presents a constant challenge for brands catering to Gen Z. Through the Urban Outfitters Insiders program, the company involves over 27,000 ambassadors in market research and engages directly with consumer feedback via platforms like Reddit. Booker also reads customer reviews closely.
Recently, Urban Outfitters capitalised on the trend of “bed parties,” an interactive way for students to reveal their college choices. In response, the company increased its range of throw pillows, accent decor, and themed merchandise. “This was a new initiative that we had this year, and it was just so much fun,” Booker remarked, noting the enthusiastic engagement from customers, parents, and students. She appreciates how Gen Z never ceases to surprise, compelling the company to evolve continuously.
